Moving to Transcy from another translation app

Whether you are coming from Weglot, Langify, LangShop, Shopify's own Translate & Adapt or anything else, the steps are the same. Doing them in this order is what keeps you from losing work you have already paid for.

What to do first: check that the plan you are about to buy covers the languages your store already has (step 1), then turn your old translation app off before you start using Transcy (step 2). Everything after that is about the translations the old app left behind.

Step 1 (do this first) — Check your plan covers the languages you already have

Do this before you pick a plan, not after.

Transcy counts every target language active in your Shopify store, including the ones your previous app added. A store with four published languages needs a plan that covers four, even if you only plan to manage one of them in Transcy.

See "Do languages added by other apps count toward my plan limit?" for how the count works, and Transcy Pricing Plan for what each plan covers.

Step 2 — Turn the old app off before you start using Transcy

Do not run two translation apps at the same time. They will compete over the same text, and when something looks wrong afterwards, neither our team nor theirs can tell whose translation is on the page.

If you want to try Transcy while your old app is still installed, switch the other app off first — then test.

We cannot tell you how to disable another company's app; the steps differ per app and they change them. Please ask that app's own support team, and turn it off properly rather than only hiding its switcher.

Step 3 — Decide what to do with the translations it left behind

This is the step worth slowing down on, because the two choices go in opposite directions and one of them cannot be undone.

Uninstalling your old app removes its code, not the translations it saved into your Shopify store. Those stay, and Transcy can see them.

If the old translations are good — keep them

Reuse them instead of paying to translate the same text again. In Content Translation, filter a resource by Untranslated, select the items, and use Mark as Translated.

If the old translations are wrong — clear them

If the previous app's output is poor, you clear it by removing the language and adding it back.

This deletes every translation for that language — permanently, and including anything Transcy has already translated. Decide this before you start translating in Transcy, not after. There is no undo.

Step 4 — If a switcher you do not recognise is still on your storefront

A language selector left over from the old app, or one built into your theme, can keep showing after you switch.

→ To find out whether it is ours: set the Transcy switcher's display mode to "Only admin".

Then open your storefront as a normal visitor. If a switcher is still there, it is not Transcy's — it belongs to your theme or to another app, and it has to be removed from whichever one put it there.

→ Set up Switcher on your store with Transcy

Step 5 — After the switch

Do not change your store's default language once you are set up. Changing it removes the existing translations for that language, and you would have to translate the store again from the new default.
